Everything has gone beautifully again today. Lester came in for ten minutes before dinner. I was glad he did not stay. Alice went to a party, brother to school, Mother to sleep. Daddy read. Since I spent the evening sewing, my thoughts were of you, John! As they always are when I’m left alone.

Everything has been “going” wonderfully for the past few days. Peg and I are running our ledger as well as any of the older men and we are just 18 and 17 respectively. I helped the other girls with statements today. What a satisfaction in doing something for someone else. “Friendly Night." I am at home, John, I am with you in heart and mind.
DURALUMINUM is a very strong, light metal which does not oxidize (rust). The substitution of Duraluminum and similar metals for iron and steel is now eliminating a great deal of loss from rust waste. John came to meet me after school. I showed him my diary. We sat together until after twelve o’clock. What does the future hold in store for us? We are contented now. Will we always be so happy?
General Lee’s birthday.* I am 17 years and 5 months old today. Virginia is related to General Robert E. Lee. Not quite as absent minded as I was yesterday – but happier. Of course John came home from school with me. How I would miss him. “Wouldn’t it be ‘nice’ if people lived a million miles away." Ah to forget the world around us!
MODERN SILK DESERTS ITS SILKWORM ORIGIN: A new material having all the qualities of silk, and yet which is a ground-wood or similar raw material product, is popular and comparatively cheap. It is called Rayon and is one of the group of new materials out of which an entire suit of clothes can be made through sheer manufacture. I have been living in a trance all day. Could not keep my mind on my work. If only I could live up to the ideal that John thinks I am. We are pals and always will be. I am very happy though. I have not been sociable today. I am not responsible for a thing I’ve done except to promise J. always to return his faithful love.
Brother* and I shoveled snow all morning. I am sitting now in my rocking chair turning over each tiny moment of last night. Ah how I enjoyed it. This is without exception the most nerve racking day of my life. “You are just being kind to me as you would to any other fellow.” How could he say that? Ah those flames!! They have driven me mad! Mad! Oh John, do you care? Will you ever tell me that you care? Have I driven you away with my pride by not telling you that I care “very” especially?
SUBMARINE SALVAGING: In order to salvage the submarine M-1 in November, 1925, a new diving suit of steel and aluminum alloy was first practically used. It protects the diver against water pressure to the depth of 500 feet, whereas before, the greatest depth reached was 120 feet. * Virginia's brother Charles Gay Scott III, always called "Brother" by his sisters. Ah what a blizzard! It has been snowing and drifting ever since very early this morning and tonight I want to see the “Student Prince.” Such luck – such luck. Who minds a little snow? O lovely operetta! I enjoyed my evening very much even when John carried me across the curbs and up the steps in his arms. The snow was worthwhile! I am very happy.
A day of days. The very things that every girl loves. I am so happy J. “called me up” and told me that he had tickets for the “Student Prince.” Mother and I sewed all evening on my green velvet dress. It is beautiful. A wonderful mother, a wonderful dress, a wonderful friend. Why shouldn’t I be happy?
DID YOU EVER THINK OF THE FACT THAT the modern elevator is as necessary to the skyscrapers of today as is the steel and stone which builds them? Automatic devices allow anyone to fly up or down with press buttons and some can be operated from the ground floor. Well this is “Friendly” night but I am too tired to go. Stayed at the office rather late. Mother helped me to cut out my velvet dress. J and I will probably go somewhere Saturday evening. Everything has gone smoothly all day. No disappointments or hard luck even though it is the “13th.” Superstitious? Never!
J. your note is due today. After a long day at the office -- horror of horrors – how I felt when Mr. Heald told me to go home after the other girls had gone. After joy comes sorrow and vice versa. So tonight the note was due. Yes J. came after school school and paid the “One Perfect Apology” that he owed me. We were both tired. I played with his watch and dropped it!
GAS FOR YOUR CAR is more abundant and consequently less expensive because a new method of “cracking” the crude petroleum has been discovered which permits a greater yield of the gasoline. This discovery had benefitted the automotive industry to a great extent. |
ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
