I also told her my (?) of life. I should have done that.

12:20 The pain is gone both the physical and mental. V. proved that one can place one's faith in a woman. I told her everything tonight. That she was the only girl who held my faith. Mr. Dredger did not say anything today. Lost faith? Bob, Walt, and myself are going down to the Stanley tomorrow to hear Paul Whiteman*. Hot dogs. Good night my dream - my sweet dream.

11:30 PM (?) V. (?). She did go to Walt's farewell party last night. She told me she would be working and (?) - God - Oh well! Who cares for shattered(?) illusions why care. I think I will call up Betty tomorrow and get a date for tomorrow night and ring (?). Late(?). I have been awfully sick the last 24 hours.
Nothing much happened today. V. is working tonight so I couldn't either call her up or see her. I wonder why she didn't call me me up to bring her home from work---Faith John. I played solitaire, listened in on Frank's radio and read and am reading John Buchanan's(?) "Wicked World." A very complicated writer.
It was raining tonight so I didn't get to school and of course I went (?) to spend the evening with her. Thanks (?) for the rain. Bill Budsley (at the bank) has bet Walt (at the bank) that he will kiss V. If he does or attempts to with more than two tries (two tries will still hold a good (?)) I shall get in touch(?) with him and fight him bare knuckles. V is going to tell him if he is tries.
12:45 A.M. Took V. to see "Underworld"! A very good picture (?) and depressing. (?) and I have (?) $57 worth of checks that were forged. Can't find any trace(?) of him(?). Am I dumb - oh (?) much routine - the machine failed. (?) Goodnight dear cheri.
Bank examiner came today. I didn't see V. tonight but I talked to her. "I will meet you under the pillar about eleven-thirty" - Love -. I missed you tonight dear.
I started to read tonight but Bob, Bill, and Walt drove up and went out looking for a fire (we heard the engine) and then went to see "Mockery." Had a great time but I - missed - you - dear. Nothing much happened at work today. I escorted V. home from school. At 10:35 P.M. just five minutes from now I am going to send a kiss to V. from my window and she will be standing at the window waiting - . A kiss carried on the winds of love - guarded by the tender hand of God. Two more months - Virginia. I would that I could be perfect just so that I might be even one tenth the part worthy of you. (?) It's time to remember that kiss - Goodnight dear.
V. gave me a lock of her hair. I gave her one of mine.
Got up at 12:00. Went to Sunday School. Mr. Dredges says that the time is drawing near. To work with the man you love and respect - God. Went over to see V. We went out and bought a "College Humor," came home, read it, and danced a while. The Scotts have decided to sell their house and move to a smaller one. Good idea but I hope they don't move too far away. Alice says Mrs. Devoe (?) hates me like a poison. Well - I love V. and that's all I care about at present and always. Took V. to dinner at the Golden Dragon and afterwards we went to see K. Cornell in The Letter.* The papers were right. A marvelous actress in a mediocre play. She is wonderful. Undoubtedly the best of the younger (?) actresses. It was the story of a woman who carries on a love affair with a man during almost all of the years of her married life. When he grew tired of her she shot him. She said she had to(?) to protect her honor. She was (?) but had to tell all to hubby. (?)
*Play by W. Somerset Maugham (Newspaper review of play tucked in journal.) Didn't see V. today, but I called her up this evening. Went with Walt to the Orpheum and saw an unusually good vaudeville show. Walt believes that a fellow (or girl) is a cad if he (or she) even takes a sip of wine. I wonder when he will change that idea. I believe (?) when gets drunk is not a gentleman but a glass of wine - ah -*. Worked on #1 (?) downtown today. 73,000 cash.
*Prohibition lasted from 1919 to 1933. The Orpheum Theater in Germantown in North Philadelphia was built in 1919 and demolished in 1967: |
ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
