I can’t stand it, I can’t stand it! What is it? I don’t know. We were together for at least a half an hour and what did we say of importance? But we were together. Our souls were in communion. I want you to hold me in your arms. I want to feel your heart beat against mine and feel your warm breath on my cheek, John. The cleanest, finest, most gentle man in the worlds.

Is love selfishness? How can it be! True love, pure love even love of “man and maid” is a part of God. God is love. It is not therefore a gift but a “part” of God. It is not love, it is I who is selfish. I want to be alone with you, John. How I longed to throw myself into your arms tonight. When you started home, my heart called to you and you turned around.
FIRST WHITE CHILD BORN IN AMERICA was Virginia* Dare, born in 1587, on Roanoke Island, now a part of North Carolina. Sir Walter Raleigh was trying very hard to found a colony in this region, which he called Virginia* in honor of Queen Elizabeth the Virgin Queen, and the little girl was named Virginia. Virginia underlined her name. Daddy has been “tormenting” me about staying in the dinning(?) “so long.” It was just a few seconds. “Damn time.” If it were always twelve o’clock!
What is the understanding in silence? Why do we so often stand silently together. So close to you I could feel your heart beating. What did it say to me! You are tired tonight after a day of hard work at your new position. “Double date” as it were. Fred, John, Alice and I played cards then went out in the snow to the drug store to find it closed. Then I went out in the kitchen to get F and G a drink of water. Those few moments we were alone in the dining room! The snow prevented you from climbing. Why did I give you the reward? For your promotion! I am so proud of you. I will never forget the last Saturday we were out in the snow together.
FLORENCE NIGHTENGALE, the first angel of Mercy, was of noble English people. During the Crimean War, she and forty nurses she brought with her, cared for a many as 10,000 wounded. In recognition of her work, England raised 50,000 pounds through subscription, to reward her, but she founded a nurses training home with it. She died in 1910, one of England’s most beloved women. I have missed my pal this evening. Lester took me to the movies to see, “The Auctioneer.” It was just a movie. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it if John had been with me. Lester has been a good and faithful friend to me but his company bores me. Education is not schooling.
Tomorrow, pal, I will see you again. How much like April it has seemed today. This afternoon’s light shower has left the air so moist and fresh and crisp. It is not cold. Some of the Friendly girls went for a hike. What a wonderful evening for a walk. The stars seem so clear. How lovely it would have been to be with you. “Oh, how I miss you tonight.”
MARK TWAIN: His real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He was one of America’s most famous writers. Best known as a humorist, he also wrote wonderful descriptions and satire. None have portrayed real boy nature as he has in “Tom Sawyer” and “Huckleberry Finn.” Few have more friends, for despite fame, he remained unaffected and simple to his death in 1910. Went to school. J went to movies but came to meet me. Mother came in from the country with some cider. We talked of the proposed climbing. Of course I had my good night kiss. Love’s the same the world over. Puppy? I pray not. Perfect confidence.
How ridiculously foolish of me! At 4 o’clock on Sat. next, J. is going to climb to the ledge above the porch and wants for a reward a drive and a kiss. John, you may pay with your life. Is it worth it? What am I thinking of—encouraging him by such a reward.
The shortest month of the year! What will it do for us! WHY DO WOMEN WEAR WEDDING RINGS? Men used to own their wives and chain them as slaves. The chain was the sign of the slave. With civilization, instead of actually putting a chain or a ring around the neck or body, men substituted a symbol for the actuality—a wedding ring.* *This is not true. |
ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
