Brother has gone to school. The rest of the family to the country. I am so glad you came for me tonight to take me to the Lox to see "Madam Wants No Children." * I loved the orchestra music and the dance "The Cat and the Canary." We arrived at home just in time to meet the rest of the family and the De Voes. Your gray suit is very becoming. I am always so proud of you.

My new bookkeeper is very good and kind but oh so slow and inaccurate.
"There is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to find fault with the rest of us." I am glad you called me tonight, John. Yes, my cold is much better. Another evening at home alone. I have danced with Alice, played the Victrola dry and tinkled the piano. Helps to amuse myself. Now I am just dreaming of you, last evening and evenings to come! Last evening you had your own way - as usual. I told you that you might not kiss me on account of my cold but you did. You held me so close to you and tilted my head back and held me so that I could not refuse the kiss you gave me. It was one of the sweetest you have given me for I knew that you wanted it when you risked such a cold as I had. And you have missed me. Yes, I know that you meant it.
AUTOMOBILE FACTS - V: Holes or Cuts in the Casing of Your Tires should be filled at once with vulcanizing compound to prevent sand and water from spreading them and causing a blowout. * In the bold lettering, Virginia had colored in all the O's and As. You schemer! Did you really want that drink of water? What is the matter with Daddy's generation. They find evil in in the most lovely things in the world. What was wrong in turning out the electric light to let the moonlight flood the room. It was much more beautiful! But no!! You say it was terribly wrong and I must not entertain in the dark! Never again will I try to set the clock back! Easter Sunday. Went to church with Alice at 11 o'clock and to children's service at 4PM. Have raised enough money to pay Miss D.'s salary. How proud we are. At last - after one long week. I enjoyed "Love Makes 'Em Wild"* at the Lon and "refreshments" at the Russian Inn. I feel as though I have been tempted. As thou you were put within my reach and suddenly snatched away again. The date being double with Alice and Fred - a goodnight kiss was impossible. You wouldn't even touch my hand but how happy I was to be near you.
*Movie AUTOMOBILE FACTS - IV: For the Better Protection of Your Tires - After each 2,500 miles of service each tire should be taken from rim, deflated, and cleaned. Inside of casing should be washed with clean gasoline and after drying should be dusted with talc. Both tread and inside should be inspected for cuts. Rims should be cleansed of rust. A holiday. Yes, for both you and I, John. Is it possible that they could have called you to come and work tonight at the bank, a holiday? Do I doubt you, John? Oh no, not that. I am just terribly disappointed. I have been so ill, physically, all week and lonely. Tonight I am so heart sick. I want you here, or there, gee, I'd be happy anywhere as long as I'm with you.
Alice and Fred had a date. It would have been double if banks didn't have to have interest periods. I know I couldn't have gone. Came home at 11 o'clock today - too ill to stay at the bank.
AUTOMOBILE FACTS - III: Don't run your motor in a closed garage or sit in a closed car with the motor running! Because the engine generates carbon monoxide, an odorless, tasteless but with absence of fresh air, instantly fatal gas. Have some fresh air in the tonneau all the time. I have been expecting it for a year or more. On that little bridge with the silvery ripples below and the almost full moon shining brightly on our faces you said that you love me. You can't Lester. It was the moonlight. It must have been! No, it has not been moonlight for seven years. For the first time in my life I felt afraid to go outside with you. The whole time I was with you my heart was calling for John as though I wanted him to come to me, to protect me. Always will. We belong to each other.
Sitting here alone – knitting on my beaded bag. Like the “Tale of Two Cities.” Knitting, knitting and dreaming, dreaming. I have felt miserable all day. Came home at 12 o’clock and stayed in bed all afternoon. Tonight I am weary. And you are working so hard. Yes – banking hours 9 to 3. Anyone who says that is like apple pie – a little bit of apple sauce and an extra lot of crust.
AUTOMOBILE FACTS – II: To Keep Windshield from Being Rain-Blurred – Wipe it downward with a soft, wet cloth with solution of 1 oz. water, 2 ox. glycerine, and 1 dram salt. No I will not see you again until Friday. I enjoyed our frolic together last evening. “Blue all day Monday, Thinkin’ about Sunday.”* But you are with me in heart and mind. You are thinking of me as I am sitting here dreaming of you. My one consolation! How I will miss our walks together now that school is over.
Jule Styne lyrics from his song “Sunday”: “I’m blue every Monday, thinkin’ over Sunday.” |
ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
