Marriage is all that I hear! Cousin Flo and Mother seem to worry about nothing except Gin and I getting husbands. Don't marry a man like this or that - If you were on a honeymoon you could not have a more lovely outfit than you have for this trip. All I could think of all evening was "Will we ever?" - and then "no." John, I can't bear to give you up.

Tuesday morning you thought I said I did not care whether you came again or not. I did not say it or think it but tonight if I would see you I would be apt to tell you that I do not care whether or not I see you again. Jealousy? Perhaps! You may have called Alice for Fred's address but you did not ask if I were still alive - you did not want a word with me. Don't you know, can't you know how my family tormented me when you called and talked to my sister and did not ask for even a word with me??? Is this what love is? No thought for my feelings, even if you did not want to hear my voice. If only I could forget you entirely - All of the gaiety in the world is of no help. I will never be happy without you - even if my pride forces me to give you up.
No. 4 - SEIDLITZ POWDERS, TWELVE IN A BOX. Seidlitz Powders are a mild purge for constipation, sick stomach, or bilious headache. No. 5 - MUSTARD, POWDERED, TWO OUNCES. Mustard Powders are taken a teaspoon in a glass of lukewarm water to cause vomiting. Either mustard or ipecac is a good remedy in convulsions in children. No. 6 - SYRUP OF GINGER, TWO OUNCES. Syrup of Ginger is for cramp in the stomach and diarrhea with cramps. Dose, one-third teaspoon in a glass of water. "Of thine unspoken word thou art master. Thy spoken word is master of thee." Oh to take back everything I said last evening. After you called me I knew that you do care. You thought of me all day? and what I said? John, I am never alone, at least the thought of you always accompanies me.
What kind of religion is it that wants young people to attend church at least once on Sunday and does not care what they do the rest of the day. It is the religion of my ancestors. God forbid that it be mine. It is no religion. I am afraid Fred was right - It will not last because it is not love. "No matter what I may say or what I may do - I will always love you." If I can always forgive it will last - but there is nothing for which to forgive now - except that - if you love me you ought to be able to find one evening out of seven in which to see me. I wish I had not seen you this morning. I have not been able to chase the thought of you from my mind today. My family is right. I must let you know that you have competition - I did not know that love could cause so many heart aches. And there is a law of equilibrium. My happy moments must be balanced. I am going out with "the girls" tonight and try to forget you. But I don't want you to forget me!
No. 3 CASTOR OIL, TWO OUNCES, TWO BOTTLES. Castor oil is a mild purgative. Use half to one teaspoon for infants, one to two teaspoons for a child and more for an adult. As diarrhea is usually due to irritating, decomposing matter in the bowels, the best way to cure it is, first to get rid of it by means of a purge. The effect of castor oil is slightly constipating afterward, but a laxative diet will remedy this. A drop or two in the eye helps to remove any foreign substance which may have lodged there. Why do so many people think facts are filth?
"Until the pure all things are pure." What the world needs is an education. Last Sunday, you were with me almost all day - Today I have been alone all day. I went to Sunday School this morning and it seemed great to be back again with so many people I know - the day has been long. "My lonely heart is sinking with the sun."*
I could not have entertained you tonight, Pete. You're a fine chap, though, and a perfect gentleman. I thank God for my Mother who is so understanding, trustful, such a friend and teacher. *From the song "When Day is Done." (I'm having trouble finding the original artist.) CONTENTS OF A GOOD MEDICINE CHEST - II: 1 - ALCOHOL, TWO OUNCES. Alcohol is for external use, to relieve the pain of sprains, strains, bruises, etc. as a liniment, and to refresh and keep the skin in good condition during illness. 2 - AROMATIC SPIRITS OF AMMONIA. (Rubber cork). TWO OUNCES. Aromatic Spirits of Ammonia is a stimulant, and is useful to revive a fainting person, or for shock or weakness. In addition, such a person should be made to lie down flat on his back with no pillow. This is so the brain may get plenty of blood. If life could be made just of smiles and pillows and bubbles that could not break. You're the kind the world needs more of - companion, pal, chum as well as sweetheart.
"One like this every night." What did you mean if you did not exactly mean what you said. Hay, hay, hay - a long hay ride way out into the country. Twenty girls and boys just bursting with fun. A jolly crowd, a very gentlemanly escort. Good things to eat. - Vast, dark, mysterious surroundings colored, made bright and warm with a bon fire and a joyous gathering of young people. I have every reason on earth to be perfectly contented but there is a great space - a lacking in my heart. It is for you. Oh what, what are you doing? Are you remembering me, as I have remembered you? John, mine forever!
I am sorry, school day chum, that I have been the cause of your belief that girls are not dependable. Surely it is fairer play to tell you now that I do not love you, than to wait until later and break your heart! Isn't that being dependable? When you moved away you said the world was not large enough to keep you away from me. I did not promise to wait for you, I have not been unfair. You knew then that I did not care. You asked for my class ring. I would not give it to you. Four telephone calls tonight. Oh, you were one of them. "The" one. CONTENTS OF GOOD MEDICINE CHEST - I The following drugs and appliances are suggested for the home medicine cabinet. If there is no medicine closet in the house, it may be convenient to know they will go into a box measuring 11 x 10 x 4 inches. Each of these should have its own place in the cabinet and should not be shifted. This rule will prevent mistakes, and a mistake in giving medicine is a very serious matter. Dempsey Tunney fight.*
John Arnold Wilson - You love me. Virginia Lee Wilson - I will marry you. Friendship, courtship, marriage, love, fate Virginia Lee Wilson? Five years from now? *Controversial boxing rematch between world Heavyweight champion Gene Tunney and former champion Jack Dempsey. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Count_Fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OeeCfbahwQ What would Daddy say if he could have seen us tonight? What will he say when he knows how much we mean to each other. Oh God, if it depends on my forgiving disposition, grant me such. But he is strong and he loves me. I do thank God for my eyes and I thank Him for you, mine - but I can hardly believe - no, it cannot be done gracefully, ever!
DISPLAYING THE NATIONAL FLAG - II: The flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset. It should be displayed on national and state holidays and on historic and special occasions. The flag should always be hoisted briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. |
ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
