Another day is gone. My lonely heart is lifted in a wordless prayer for you, my pal, my, life. John.

What has caused the mood that I am in tonight? Everybody "why?ing" and "don'ting" me! Why am I not more tactful? Why don't I go out and meet lots of boys, dance and have a good time? Why don't I take more interest in church work - that suits my type!!! Don't smoke, don't be a flapper, don't sit at home and sew. Why go to night school - experience is better? Why don't I study at night - it will be a great benefit! Ye, gads! What shall I do? An answer - please John and be true to my own soul and mind! A touch of your hand - this morning and the day's work was no burden. Afternoons like yesterday's and today's work was a pleasure.
DISPLAYING THE NATIONAL FLAG-I: On a speaker's platform it should be displayed above and behind the speaker. When flown at half staff the flag is hoisted to the peak for an instant, and then lowered to the half staff position, but before lowering the flag for the day it is raised again to the peak. Warm September suns, velvet lawns, a willow tree, you - perfect contentedness. Evening - to church where I meet you, a thunder storm, bright flashes of lightning, roaring thunder, tearing (?) rain - you.
Fifty million Frenchman may be wrong, but two Americans know that they are right. It is because of golden moments like those we have had together tonight - linked into a chain of love that cannot be torn apart, that makes life worth living.

I am glad that you could go to Washington, you need the change, the rest. I am doing my best to be a pal to my poor ill miserable father. God help me. I have tried to keep above our worry - to be lighthearted and forget poverty and misery. In doing so I have spoiled my disposition. Instead of aiding them, I have almost broken your hearts. How have you kept your respect for me so long, John. "Remember, no matter what happens, I love you." That is my one consolation - the one thing that makes life worth living."
I am trying hard, John. Even Eva told me today how I have changed in the past year. I would not have listened to anyone on earth as I listened to you last night. We can thank God that we have each other. More of a "pal" every day? Moment by moment you are closer to my heart. When night is done and moonlight and romance are gone - in the heart of practical, manual labor, I find my mind drifting to you. My heart calls for you; I know that I love.

1. My Dad! 2. "No matter what I may say or what I may do, I will aways love you." "Tonight - I smile or you." Written through tears that could not be helped. It is good to see one's relatives once in a while. You are a sport Maxwell. If I were not your cousin I would hardly trust myself with you. You have a girl in every port or is it every davenport? I also liked your "frat" brother, Joe. Mother says again - "None of them are the polished gentleman that John is. He is so thoughtful, gentle and still a man's man."

I was glad to see you here and glad to meet Joe - but neither of you are the polished gentleman that John is - with all of your schooling, money, and social background - they do not make the man.
"I am sorry she has fallen into it so young, it will cause her many a heartache." Tonight my heart is aching for you who did not sound like your old self when you called. Free love? On no! Not in U.S. One year's trial before marriage? No, not that! What we need in this country to prevent divorce is stricter marriage laws - tests - mental and physical. An age limit? No - some of us are older than other our age. If the country's children were raised in asylums it would mean a physically, mentally strong race but morally - weaker. The family is the unit on which the state is built. The ideal family is built on love. A love that means life if necessary. The man and woman must honor and respect each other as co-workers and pals. The finer the love - the finer the family - the finer the state the finer the race and the world.

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
