"Often our first response to fear is to feel our own fragility, and so we move away and hide, we make ourselves invisible or inaccessible to whatever might try to bring us harm, thereby exaggerating the experience of fear. When we run from experiences that feel dangerous, we generate additional fear and anxiety . . . We still seek to find safety by eliminating external danger rather than relying on our own inner resources for sanctuary and protection. We may discover that we feel safer when we move toward those things that frighten us, not when we move away."
