My darling. I've been so unkind to you. You're so good to me, so patient with me. You let me complain, criticize, nag you - and you never say a word. You've given me so much, taken me to two plays this week, you're so gentle and I've treated you as though you were a servant at my command. I don't want to be unkind to you for I love you for all the things you give me. I'm selfish enough to want the one thing you can't give - affection. I must remember Van Dyke's philosophy and make friend with my luck.

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
