I know someone who seems to be everything a man should be - except possibly physically. He is too thin and not strong looking but he is tall and very graceful. He has a strong face, a most cultured and pleasing voice, he is an idealist and a dreamer - but he is not lazy. He is well read for a young man and intelligent. He lives the country, he loves the wood, he loves the water and loves to travel. He is optimistic and practical. He is self-willed and determined, he is gentle and thoughtful. I have not yet found a fault in him though I see him daily. Why do I love John instead of him?

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
