Sometimes I think there is no one on earth less happy than I. How can a man like my father talk about ancestors. Mrs. Berkley's presence does disgrace our home. And still I feel sorry for Daddy. He has done his best to live a fine, upright life ever since he met my mother. He has been the best of fathers, giving his all to his family while his heath lasted - the sins of the fathers. Yes, Daddy, your whole family has suffered because of your wrong. But you have done your best to right it. God knows and will reward you. Our God is a just God. So you see, John and I may be young, but there is an advantage in it. We will both live the best life we can, making ourselves worthy of each other. Mother, you do love Daddy. Knowing what you did of his life, you would never have married him if you did not love him.

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
