John dear, I am so happy to tonight. I love you so much, I know that you love me! I did miss you when you were away. And you missed me too "terribly." When I am with other boys I think only of you. The more I see of them, the more I love you. Oh, John, my "head bookkeeper" some day - "my President" and even more you said some day you will be totally "mine." And then you won't be able to go to Atlantic City and sleep under the boardwalk. I cringe if Art or Erve hardly touch me but you I love to have you kiss me - my temples, cheeks, chin, lips - fingers. You left my ring home tonight for the first time. But your finger has been marked by it! And will be forever and ever! Mine! I can feel your soft hands now tilting my face so that you might touch my lips. Broke a date with Art for your sake!!!!!

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
