A lie? John, have you lied to me? I don't care if you have other "dates." I can have as many myself, in fact, I have refused two this week. But why lie about. I'm afraid I've lost quite a bit of respect for you. I do not know when to believe you, now. What did you mean when you asked me if Alice had told me "anything special" and should you "choke or kiss Fred"? You have not been at ease with me tonight! You were silent and said that you "say too much anyway." Have you said too much to me, John! I am sorry and will try to forget what you have told me. But from now until I die I will wonder if you have ever been serious.

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
