GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN RADIO TELEPHONY - VIII
FADING - The fluctuation of the strength of a radio signal, caused by atmospheric phenomena. The distance between the transmitting station and the receiving set is one of the main factors in fading. Therefore, the degree of fading depends upon the location of the broadcasting station. Dead spots in the air which cause fading have been known to move from place to place.
