Down in the valley of the Wissahickon within the city of Phila. I could have walked all day with you and mother. This day we have been together, side by side in sunshine and in showers, in darkness and in light, in valleys and on hills, riding and on foot, in seriousness and the lightest play, alone (just you and I) and with others, in short clothes and "dressed." Every moment has been a joy. To dance with you and stand by you when you play and sing, to sit close to you. You came to see me seven long months before you ever kissed me! You wanted my friendship - not my lips. To try and kiss me (as much as you wanted to) would have been too great a risk at losing me. But you have made up for it since!! Oh to sleep there on that sofa all night long with you to guard over me, and mine.

ContextThis is the journal of Virginia Lee Scott, my grandmother, written when she was seventeen and first dating my grandfather, John Arnold Wilson. It's a dairy published by Media Drug Stores and includes space for two entries per day, with facts about the era printed at the bottom, which I have included in italics. Following, 1928, is the journal of John Arnold Wilson, my grandfather, at age nineteen and in love with my grandmother, followed by my grandmother's journal in 1931. Archives
