For those of us who tie ourselves up with thoughts and worries and the stories we tell ourselves, a helpful strategy is to note: "I am having the thought that . . . " followed with your judgment or concern. That gives us a little distance. It helps us recognize that what we are thinking is not necessary truth. "I am having the thought that I won't have enough time. I am having the thought that that person doesn't like me. I am having the thought that I didn't do that well." This allows us to notice reoccurring patterns in our thoughts and introduces the possibility that we are not seeing the whole picture or have exaggerated perspectives.
